Headshot and Resume, Please!

Actors, let’s talk resumes!

At the start of our careers, we all needed to start somewhere. Many of us opened up Microsoft Word, edited the ole black and white document, made a pass-able resume, and went on our way. If we were really with the times, we may have even put our headshot or agency in the corner!

Gone are the days of the simple black and white resume document. These days, you want to stand out. In the sea of hundreds or even thousands of black and white basic resumes, why not stand out in a simple, but professional and polished way?

Your resume can stand out with some simple branding and re-editing.

Below are some resume guidelines to follow!

Make sure your resume is:

  • Organized

  • Easy -To- Read

  • Honest (Don’t lie on your resume, period!)

  • On Brand with Your Personality/Type/How You Want to Be Seen (This one is big)

  • Puts you in your best light

  • Says everything about you without you even having to sing one note!

  • A resume is often seen before you ever audition, and a vital part of the package that gets you in the door. Often times it is a theatres first impression of you, so wouldn’t you want that to be as put together as the outfit you chose for the day?

  • If you have been working for a minute and have several credits added up, you want to start thinking about how you want to be seen and what you want to be considered for/cast as. Do you want to be seen as a leading lady? Start thinking about putting those ensemble and swing track credits on the bottom, and put your most shining leading and supporting roles up near the top.

  • What about school credits? Ideally, the more you start booking work, the more professional credits you will have to replace your highschool/undergrad/community credits.

  • Start thinking about branding. What colors are your favorite? What colors do you wear to auditions? What color is your website? What color is the clothing in your headshots? What color do you feel represents your personality best?

A performer’s resume is much more complex than just a simple document. It should be viewed as a portfolio, and be putting you in your best light.
